Beyond Petroleum - The Coming Green Go Juice Revolution
For some time now I’ve speculated the best solar energy collection method would go something like this:
1- take one shallow tank of water, salt with a genetically modified algae and bacteria mix
2- Green algae absorbs sunlight and grows.
3- Bacteria eats and ferments algae
4- alcohol drains out a spigot into a holding talk.
The advantage would be one could make your collector as large as you could afford to build.
I do not know if the exact details are scientifically practical but nonetheless its the over all skeleton of the idea that’s worth considering. In an arty that announced the First artificial life ‘within months’ its suggested something very similar to this could be practical.
This is the type of development that can lead to changes in societies that reform to such a degree as to be a transition point similar to the Wright brothers development of a the practical control system for the airplane. Who can say exactly when we were transformed? In or about 1904 we were for all practical purposes flightless. By World War I we were gunning at each other from aircraft.
The transition to green solar fuels is coming and guessing by feel alone by 2020 we’ll be solidly down the oil-free pathway. Things are going to get very exciting in the next 15 years.
Watch for alot of people with vested interests in being “against” petroleum to switch to being “against” bio-engineering bugs to make fuels. Remember, these “ecological” organizations such as greenpeace are really just another business organism. An no organism wants to die except the obviously unviable ones. Thus expect one boogey man to be replaced with another. Thus the transplantation of dna from bacteria to bacteria will require the the environmental movement to get a boogeyman transplant.
Frauds and Charlatans. Don’t buy their product. Let them go out of business. They won’t be needed any more.
