Downloading a Youtube video using VLC
I've mentioned the VLC Media Player above because it's a fantastic tool for Windows users that plays back just about any media ever created. It turns out, it also has the ability to download YouTube videos, albeit in a convoluted way. (If you run into any problems with it, you may need to do a full re-install of VLC and clear your cache to make this work.)
- Copy a URL from a YouTube video
- open up VLC. From the Media menu select Open Network Stream(Ctrl+N) and paste in the URL.
- Click Play.
- When the video is playing, go to Tools > Codec Information. There is a box at the bottom called "Source"—copy the URL you find in that box.
Go back to your browser and paste the URL—it's a temporary web address and will expire eventually—in the address bar and start playing the video. When you're viewing the video in the browser, you'll see an option to download the file to keep locally.
However, it appears that VLC is only going to save your file as 1080p and not any higher, even if the original YouTube stream was available in 1440p or 2160p (aka 4K). It also won't convert video to other formats. To get those options, you need the desktop software below.
Extract the Audio from Any Video File with VLC
VLC is not just a Media Player, it is a whole software in itself.This is just an experiment which I did to try and get an MP3 file from a video I downloaded from YouTube. VLC has a very easy way to convert the FLV (or any other video file for that sake) to MP3. All you need to do is:
- Open VLC.
- Go to Media –> Convert/Save.
- When you click Convert/Save, it opens a dialog box where in you can select the file which you need to convert(i.e. the video/FLV file which you wish to convert to MP3).
- After selecting the file click on Convert/Save button located in the lower right hand side of the dialog box.
- After this,there would be a dialog box for Stream Output. Check the option ‘File’, and go to ‘Browse’ to locally save the file with the filename of your choosing. Whenever you enter the new file name and click Save, a “.ps” is appended at the end of the file name. Substitute the “.ps” extension with a “.mp3” extension.
- In the Settings section of the Convert dialog box there is Profile drop down menu. Within the Profile section pull the menu down and select MP3 (for MP3encoding).
- Click SAVE and let the data Stream. Once finished, open the MP3 file and enjoy.
There is a limit beyond which YoutTube's automatic generation of closed caption transcripting does not work. Thus if you want autogenerated CC you will need to break up the video into smaller pieces. For my first experiment I used 10 minute long pieces and that funcioned as desired.

- Upload the videos to youtube
- Download the CC using this method and insert into blog entry
