MicroTek 4900 Flatbed Scanner Linux VueScan Drivers and Utilities

Published by Fudgy McFarlen on

Searched for a new model of used flatbed scanner on OLX.  While search for drivers I found the VueScan project.

Notes

  • Vuescan is not open source.
  • You can use the free trial as long as you want.  To remove watermark pay 40 USD
  • VueScan is much more than just a driver. While it is famous for acting as a universal driver (allowing you to use old or unsupported scanners on modern computers), it is primarily a fully featured, standalone scanning application.

Yes. The software has built-in, reverse-engineered drivers for 93 different Microtek models, meaning it can often operate these scanners without needing the original manufacturer software.

You can check if your specific model is supported by looking at the official VueScan Microtek Compatibility List.

What you need to know:

  • OS Compatibility: VueScan adds support for Microtek scanners on modern Windows, macOS (including Apple Silicon), and Linux, bypassing the issue of older Microtek drivers no longer working on newer operating systems.
  • Installation: In most cases, VueScan will automatically install the necessary driver. You don't need to delete existing Microtek software, as VueScan's built-in drivers will run alongside them without conflict.
  • Connection Tips: If you are using an older scanner with a Firewire or SCSI connection, you may need a specific adapter to run it on a modern computer. If your scanner has connectivity issues, switching from Firewire to USB is a commonly recommended workaround.

To verify your scanner's compatibility and download the software, visit the VueScan Scanner Software Portal
