Why DNA is in the Form of a Spiral

I have a theory on why DNA is in th form of a spiral.  The two photos below suggest a reason:

Its very easy to push two springs together in a way that meshings them with a ratio of 1:1 turn per turn.  This turn per turn meshing would help sync up the spacing to reduce error in placement.  It would only require 1 turn mesh being skipped on 1 helix before the energy of the configuration would be greater than the configuration of the correctly meshed configuration.  Thus with each full turn there is a propensity to fall into the correct configuration.
