Elevated Heart Rate After Exercise When I do not Ingest Fuel Before

I have noticed an elevated heart rate after my 15 mile ride when I do not ingest any food beforehand.   This elevated rate does not seem to end until after I have fallen asleep.  I also feel fatigued afterwards.  I eat afterwards as I am naturally very hungry but yet my heart rate stays slightly elevated until after I am asleep a while.  This is whether I ride slow or really push it and go fast.

If I ingest a bottle of soda pop with 64 grams of sugar which is the equivalent of 240 calories there about I find that after the ride my heart rate quickly goes back to normal.    In addition I do not feel fatigued when I return home.  A representation of how much sugar that is shown here.  It is significantly more than I put in any of the teas I have tried using in place of the soda pop

There are only 2 things this can be:

  • low blood sugar
  • dehydration

Another symtom I was seeing was consistently waking up with a minor headache and of course not sleeping well.

I suspect it is probably due to the hormones required to pull energy out of fat tissue.  This would not dissipate quickly once I return home even if I eat or drink till back on energy or water balance.   The ride is much more pleasant when I drink the soda pop.

Update:  Latest theory is that the glycogen levels in the liver store go down as I exercise. In order to extract energy from the liver at the same rate the heart has to flow more blood per unit time.

Riding the KT Trail Saint Louis to Clinton Missouri

I check out the KT trail at Weldon Springs and rode to Augusta Missouri.  The surface is good.  A standard rode bike tire works well.  If you have a high end road bike with the ultra narrow tires there may be issues.  If you are running the ultra narrow tires check it out before committing to big efforts.

Life Expectancy Table – The older your are the longer you will have lived

Life expectancy table

You can figure out the mean number of years you have left using this table.  It is interesting to note that if you are 50 you have a mean of 28.99 more years to live.  Whereas if you are 60 years old you have 20.92 years left.   So if you are 50 you will live to be 78.99 years old but if you are 60 you will live to be 80.92 years old.

Thus the older you are the longer you will have lived.  So the secret of old age is to live a long time.

Addiction to Jelly Belly

At first I thought Jelly Belly were merely good and this explained the popularity.  But one can not know at first just from the flavor why they sold so many.  Only after eating enough to develop "The Jelly Belly Addiction" can you know the full scope of why sales went parabolic.  It is as though they add space dust to them and you get addicted.  Once the addiction kicks in look out!   You will madly shove these chewy flavor bursts into your mouth as fast as you can.  I am surprised they do not sell them at crack houses.

You know how it works. Put the money in the mail slot and down the drainspout rolls Jelly Belly's. Sonofa! they rolled me stank flavors!

And there in lies why I can never eat Jelly Belly's again.  Once an addict always an addict.  I just have to admit I have a problem.

The Anti Inflammatory Diet

As previously mentioned in this blog I tried in my early 40's to lose weight.  I would run 5 miles per day and still only hold a steady weight.  No weight loss!  Below is an updated summary of the tricks I have discovered and developed to lose weight in an effortless fashion.  They work on me who has many over allergies.  They also work on my room mate who gets next to no exercise and has no overt signs of allergy. He gets no headaches and has no problem with psoriasis or with congestion.

Do not eat the following     In descending order of importance for inflammation response.

  1. Any wheat / gluten containing product  – make sure your beer is not made with wheat!  No gluten beer == no headache!  Many recommend whole grains but that is crazy.  The Romans noticed more than 2k years ago that soldiers fed wheat were not as ready for battle.
  2. No caffeine or erstwhile stimulants:  No chocolate either!  ( it is quite a stimulant )
  3. dairy product – cheese, milk , yogurt
  4. eggs
  5. avoid peanut butter or any other item that tends to have alot of fungus in it.
  6. Sugar – ( this one is not so much inflammation issues as it is a simple insulin transform away from fat deposits )

Sleep is central to weight loss and function of a clear mind!

  1. debug your sleep process – this means figuring out if you have sleep apnea. This is common with people that are carrying extra weight. I experienced sudden wake ups after my throat would prolapse and prohibit breathing.
  2. buy an oxygen concentrator  and use it when you sleep – very deep sleep with very slow heart rates.  Its also good for getting rid of headaches.
  3. take an NSAID such as ibuprofen before going to sleep at night.  It helps your body reduce the irritations of the day during sleep.

Additional techniques that are very helpful ( almost indespensible )

  • Cook for yourself and find recipes that are easy and efficient to prepare.  This allows you total control over what you eat.  If you prepare food that is so good that it hits your psychological satisfaction centers of the brain you'll find the going much easier
  • Get a pressure cooker off of ebay.  They are cheaper there than Walmart and you will get an older much higher quality pan there.  I am in love with my pressure cooker.  You really can not prepare beans very well without.  It takes too long and its virtually impossible to get the right texture.

For carbohydrates substitute dried beans such as chick peas or kidney beans for the carbohydrates you had in your diet.   I have lost 25 lbs at the very least with this diet at the age of 49.  A feat I had all but given up on until I invented the anti inflammation diet.  Likewise with my room mate who eats almost exclusively what I cook due to aversion to kitchen processes.  The energy release from beans is much more smooth than wheat flower which tends to hit you with a case of pasta shock.  These days I consider wheat flower to be a quasi sugar because of this.

The best theory I have for why this works is that the effects of allergy / inflammation / irritation of the body are such that they inhibit weight loss.

Additional benefits

  • as you lose weight you will automatically start sleeping better
  • A nice side effect of this diet is you will be getting adequate fiber.  I have gone from moving once per day to up to 5 times per day. No more struggling!
  • joints feel much better.  Any sensation of sore or stiff joints are gone now.
  • bph ( benign prostrate hypertrophy ) is lessened.  Caffeine is your enemy if you have this issue.
  • a clearer mind.  As an engineer I am super sensitive differences in my intellectual performance.  If I am having a bad day physically it translates directly into a poor intellectual performance.

Blood Sugar Testing

Used a cheapy test kit to test my blood sugar.

  • Level = 86 mg/dL  > This was 10 am reading.
  • Level = 104 mg/dL > this was 9:30 PM > following the trends of the curve below closely.  6-18-2010 > after eating sweet carbs during the day
  • Level = 86 > hungry before breakfast 6-20-2010 > had potatos that elevated my sugar levels yesterday.  After eating a 2 egg & chickpea salad breakfast Level = 87.  Lunch included chicken with sweet barbeque sauce and small amount of rice and beads: Level = 107 afterwards.  I can feel the difference.  Less ability to concentrate.   Went for a walk to lower sugar level.  Distance = 1 mile: Level = 80 afterwards.  Feel a slight hunger.  Waiting to see if it goes away.
  • 6-21-2010:  after a day of eating light in the afternoon level = 78 mg/dL :  it is not optimal for brain function.   Slightly sleepy.
  • 6-22-2010:  after a decent breakfast at 8 am I later hiked up Squaw Peak > blood sugar afterwards: Level = 77
