People are not the only organism that evolves.  The microbes do too and at a rate we can not hope to match because they reproduce by the minute not by the decade.

Here is the correct way to view the sexual revolution:

  1) A very short exception to the rule in a long history.

  2) Maybe even an illusion.

#1 is true because before antibiotics Syphillus filled a similar role in that it was transmitted by the same processes.   Enter antibiotics and low and behold sooner or later something the same or worse comes around.  Life fills the gap in the ecosystem.  Where there is excess energy available life evolves to exploit it.  Find one place on Earth where some extremophile has not taken up residence.

#2 is probably true because while we had anti-biotics post WW2,  all the other bad things were not being measured.  Alot of cancers are transmitted by sexual contact.  Witness enhanced probabilities of uterine cancer for the partners of men with testicular cancer.  Whether the exact method is viral or otherwise is not the important point.  Add to these cancers the hep C and other version we probably do not know about and you have a veritable stew of sexually transmitted nasties that have not even been accounted for properly.

Now we see AID’s and Drug Resistant Aids.    We should therefore consider this period of free-sex in the late 40’s, 50,s and first part of the 70’s to be at best a microbial abberation.

Its not me to preach.  I have had my fair share of fun with the ladies.  However I do wonder sometimes if I will have a price to pay later down the road.  Luckily its not anything now.  But our lives can easily span 70 years with even a modest amount of luck.  When living your life you have to live it for the long run.  No matter what we do we’re sure to find ourselves wanting more time.
